Siam Niello Sterling Jewelry
The techniques for making Niello jewelry have been used for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. The crafting of the Siam Niello jewelry items of which we are most familiar began in the 1930's and continued into the 1990's. These were produced mainly for foreign export by highly skilled craftsmen in Thailand. They were consistently marked "Siam" by the many companies that made the jewelry.
Most Siam Sterling jewelry is based on the Thai legend called Ramakien. The figures seen on the jewelry are part of this legend.
Charles Dittell's book on Siam jewelry is a great reference for collectors Overview of Siam Sterling Nielloware.
